Ford ranger gears for more top speed but still good off the line?

I raced a mustang in my ranger and i had him off the line and held him off but his top end caught me .i am trying to understand rear end gear ratio. Would the lower the number be for top end and the higher the number be for torque? What would be a good gear for both decent off line and decent top speed?
