Getting a horse registered?

I recently received a paso fino/mustang mix,2 year old paint horse. He was given to me so I would like to have papers on him other than the bill of sale incase there is any funny buisness to come up because I plan on having him for 20+ years. The father is a pure bred registered paso but the mother is not. How much would it cost and what steps do I need to take?
